Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary of India's Department of Telecommunications, led a large group to Geneva for strategic discussions at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Headquarters from March 18 to 20. The goal was to improve collaboration and pursue new ideas in the telecommunications and information and communication technology (ICT) sectors.
Election Of Dr. Neeraj Mittal As Co-Chair
Dr. Neeraj Mittal was unanimously elected as co-chair of ITU's Digital Innovation Board, which functions under the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Alliance for Digital Development.
The Digital Innovation Board is made up of telecom/ICT ministers and vice ministers from 23 ITU member nations, and its aim is to promote innovation and entrepreneurship for a more inclusive digital future.
Goals Of The Innovation And Entrepreneurship Alliance
The alliance intends to solve significant unmet requirements in innovation among ITU Members, as described in the Kigali Action Plan and the conclusions of the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2022.
It has three primary vehicles the Digital Transformation Lab, the Network of Acceleration Centres, and the Digital Innovation Board.
Strategic Discussions And Bilateral Meetings
Meetings with ITU officials, including Dr. Cosmos Zavazava, focused on expanding the ITU Area Office India, Digital Transformation Lab, Acceleration Centers, and Global Innovation Center in India.
Dr. Mittal proposed that the next meeting of the Digital Innovation Board be held in India with the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) in 2024.
Bilateral conversations with Japan and Bahrain focused on AI collaboration, 5G use cases, cybersecurity, and a reciprocal review of ICT MOUs.
Collaborative Initiatives And Future Engagement
India and Japan have proposed active collaboration on AI, 5G application cases, and Quantum Product certification.
Japan and Bahrain committed to actively work in a variety of ICT industries, including AI, 5G, and cybersecurity.
India welcomed Japanese government and industry delegates to events such as WTSA 2024 and India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024.
