Description
The New Zealand government has announced a ban on disposable e-cigarettes and vapes. The move comes less than a month after the government scrapped a law intended to eliminate tobacco smoking.
Increased Fines For Selling To Minors
Along with the ban, New Zealand will increase sanctions for businesses and individuals who sell vapes or e-cigarettes to minors under the age of 18.
New Fines And Penalties
Retailers can face fines of up to 100,000 New Zealand dollars (€55,590) for selling to minors.
Individuals will be fined $1,000 New Zealand dollars (€556) for the same offense.
Preventing Youth Appealing Products
The new restrictions would prohibit the sale of e-cigarettes with graphics or names that are likely to appeal to youth.
Reason For The ban
According to Associate Health Minister Casey Costello, e-cigarettes are still "a key smoking cessation device." However, the new regulations seek to prevent minors from developing the vaping habit.
Global Trend Against Disposable Vapes
New Zealand is not the only country taking action against disposable e-cigarettes-
United Kingdom British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declared a ban on disposable vapes in 2022, expressing concerns about the long-term effects and potential addiction among young people.
Australia similarly banned throwaway single-use vapes this year.
