Description

Begusarai, Bihar, is the most polluted city in the world, according to the World Air Quality Report 2023 published by IQAir, a Swiss-based nonprofit. According to the research, India is home to 83 of the world's top 100 most polluted places. Guwahati is the second most polluted city after Begusarai, with Delhi third and Mullanpur (Punjab) fourth.

India Is The Third Most Polluted Country

  • At the national level, India ranks third after Bangladesh and Pakistan among the five most polluted countries out of 134.

  • According to the research, India's PM2.5 level of 54.4 µg/m3 exceeds the WHO yearly recommendation by more than tenfold. PM2.5 stands for dangerous fine particulate matter.

South Asia Is The Most Impacted Region

  • South Asia was home to the world's top ten most polluted cities. Climate conditions and transboundary haze were important contributors to growing PM2.5 levels across Southeast Asia.

  • Only seven of 134 nations met the WHO's annual PM2.5 standard, including Australia, New Zealand, and Iceland.

Gaps In Air Quality Monitoring

  • While the number of countries monitoring air quality has grown, the report identified substantial inadequacies in government-run monitoring systems in many parts of the world.

  • Low-cost monitors hosted by citizen scientists and local organizations are helping to close gaps in global air monitoring networks.

Urgent Need For Action

  • IQAir CEO Frank Hammes commented on the findings, saying that access to air quality data saves lives and motivates decisive action to improve air quality.

  • Greenpeace stated that the data serves as a stark reminder of the health consequences of air pollution and the urgent need for solutions.

  • With only 9% of cities meeting WHO PM2.5 limits, the research highlights the need for significantly greater worldwide efforts to tackle the health and environmental effects of air pollution.

Key findings

  • The French Polynesia region has the cleanest air, while the country of Mauritius has the cleanest air.

  • Bangladesh is the most polluted country, with PM2.5 levels of 79.9 µg/m3, 15 times higher than the WHO yearly recommendation.

  • Pakistan ranks second at 73.7 µg/m3, 14 times higher than the WHO yearly recommendation.

  • Out of 134 countries and regions, 124 (92.5%) exceeded the WHO annual PM2.5 guideline of 5 µg/m3.

  • Africa remains the most under-represented continent, with a third of the population still not having access to air quality data.
