Description
The Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi, chaired by President Sri Madhav Kaushik, met at Rabindra Bhavan in New Delhi and approved the selection of 24 novels for the Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize 2023. The novels were chosen based on proposals from three-member Selection Committees in each language, which followed established rules and processes. The prize honors translations published between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2021.
Selection Process And Prize Details
The Selection Committees recommended Translation Prizes in their respective languages. The prize, which includes a cash reward of Rs. 50,000 and a copper plaque, will be handed to the translators of the chosen works at a special ceremony later this year.
Kannaiyan Daksnamurthy, A Tamil writer, Is Awarded For Translating "The Black Hill"
Kannaiyan Daksnamurthy, a Tamil writer, has received the Sahitya Akademi Award for Translation for his Tamil translation of Mamang Dai's novel "The Black Hill." Originally released in English in 2014, the novel was translated into Tamil as "Karungunram" in 2016. "The Black Hill" had already received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2017, one year after its release. Kannaiyan Daksnamurthy is a well-known translator who has translated works on a variety of topics, including the 1857 insurrection, short stories from Sri Lanka, and biographies of important personalities such as Indira Gandhi and Vivekananda.
About "The Black Hill"
Mamang Dai's novel "The Black Hill" is set in the colonial era and follows the lives of two competing tribes who elope to be together. The story is based on a true incident involving the disappearance of a French Jesuit priest, Father Nicolas Krick, in the 1950s and the subsequent execution of someone involved.
Bangali Nanda Receives The Kendra Sahitya Akademi Prize For Translation
Bangali Nanda, a writer and former teacher from Rayagada district, has been awarded the renowned Kendra Sahitya Akademi Prize for Translation in 2023. Nanda received the Odia language prize for his translation of Nelluri Keshavaswamy's Telugu short tale collection "Nelluri Keshavaswamy Uthama Kathalu," which was released by the National Book Trust (NBT) in 2019 under the title "Nelluri Keshavaswamyanka Shrestha Galpa." A three-member panel comprised of Vaishnab Charan Samal, Bipin Bihari Mishra, and Prasanna Kumar Mohanty recommended the book for selection. Nanda is a prolific writer and translator, having published multiple books and translated over 14 works from other languages into Odia.
Nepali And Manipuri Authors Honored For Translating Odia Works
Jiwan Bantawa, a Nepali novelist, and Nabakumar Nongmeikapam, a Manipuri writer, received Akademi translation honors for their Odia short story collections. Bantawa translated Sanjukta Mohanty's "Itihasara Chinna Prusthae," while Nongmeikapam translated Akhil Mohan Patnaik's "O Andha Gali." Additionally, Ramakant Ray's Maithili translation of Gopinanth Mohanty's Odia novel "Amrutara Santana" and the Hindi version of Gourahari Das' "Kanta O Anya Galpa" by the title "Kanta Tatha Anya Kahania" were chosen for the award.
The Sahitya Akademi Awards Recognize Literary Excellence
The Sahitya Akademi Award, which has been granted yearly by the Union government since 1954, is regarded as one of India's highest literary accolades.
