Description

Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister for Jal Shakti, launched the fifth edition of the "Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain" campaign at the NDMC Convention Centre in New Delhi on March 11, 2024. The campaign, titled "Nari Shakti se Jal Shakti," emphasizes the importance of women in water conservation and management.

Campaign Overview

The "Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain" campaign is a joint effort by the National Water Mission, the Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation, and the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation. The campaign's goal is to promote water conservation and sustainable management through citizen participation, with a particular emphasis on women's vital role in these efforts.

Key Features Of JSA: CTR Campaign 2024

This year's marketing will focus on numerous major aspects, including-

  • De-silting and cleansing water bodies

  • Revitalizing abandoned or defunct borewells for groundwater replenishment

  • Geo-tagging water bodies and updating state revenue data.

  • Enhanced afforestation initiatives in water body catchment zones.

  • Snow harvesting in hilly regions like Ladakh

  • Regeneration of tiny rivers

Women's Roles In Water Conservation

  • The launch event brought together women water warriors from all backgrounds to discuss their experiences, challenges, and accomplishments in championing water conservation activities.

  • Approximately 24 lakh women have been trained to test water samples with Field Testing Kits (FTK) to ensure the quality of piped water supply.

Atal Bhujal Yojana And Women's Representation

The Atal Bhujal Yojna assures that at least 33% of Gram Panchayat members are women who contribute to the development of water budgets and security strategies. This project highlights the importance of women's participation in water resource decision-making processes.

Jal Jeevan Mission's Success

  • The Government of India initiated the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in July 2019 through the Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation.

  • The mission has reached 75% of rural homes with tap water connections, which has a favorable impact on societal welfare throughout the country's rural areas.

Focused Interventions For JSA: CTR 2024

The campaign consists of several focused interventions-

  • Water Conservation and Rainwater Harvesting

  • Counting, geotagging, and compiling an inventory of all water bodies

  • Developing scientific plans for water conservation.

  • Establishing Jal Shakti Kendras in all districts.

  • Intensive forestry

  • Raising awareness

  • Collaborative Efforts And Public Participation

The success of the Jal Shakti Abhiyan is dependent on the combined efforts of the central and state governments, as well as the active engagement of individuals.
Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat praised citizens' participation in earlier campaigns and urged everyone to actively participate in the "Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain" campaign in 2024.
