Description

On March 8, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that Indian educator, author, and philanthropist Sudha Murty had been nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu. The nomination, which coincides with International Women's Day, emphasizes the importance of representation from all regions of the country, as well as women's participation in political decision-making.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized Murty's presence in the Rajya Sabha as a significant monument to 'Nari Shakti' (women power), demonstrating women's strength and potential to shape the nation's destiny. The nomination serves as an inspiration to women around the country, emphasizing the significance of their achievements in a variety of disciplines.

Sudha Murty’s Contributions

Sudha Murty, wife of Infosys founder Narayana Murthy and mother of venture investor Akshata Murty (married to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak), is an accomplished writer in both Kannada and English. She has written novels, technical books, and travelogues, and her humanitarian activities are considerable.

As chairperson of the Infosys Foundation, Murty has addressed topics such as poverty, healthcare, and sanitation. She has built thousands of homes in flood-affected areas, founded libraries in schools, and supported the construction of public restrooms. Her influence goes beyond India, since she established the Murty Classical Library of India at Harvard University.

Sudha Murthy Received Awards

In 2006, the Government of India awarded Sudha Murty the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honor for humanitarian achievement. In 2023, she received the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award.
