Description
Researchers in Ecuador's rainforest discovered a new species of anaconda, Eunectes Akiyama, that diverged from its closest relatives 10 million years ago. Despite their genetic differences, these anacondas look identical to the previously known species, Eunectes murinus.
Discovery And Characteristics
A team led by Dutch researcher Freek Vonk made the discovery after encountering huge 20-foot-long specimens in the Amazon.
The new species, known as the "northern green anaconda," reaches up to 200 kilograms (441 pounds) and exhibits significant genetic difference from its counterpart.
Environmental Implications
Bryan G. Fry, an Australian biology professor who has conducted considerable research on anacondas, emphasizes the importance of employing these snakes as environmental health indicators.
Anacondas shed light on the environmental effects of oil spills in Ecuador's Yasuni region, exposing frightening amounts of petrochemical contamination in their bodies.
Human Health Concerns
Fry warns of the possible risks to human health, particularly for pregnant women, from the accumulation of oil spill metals in anacondas and arapaima fish.
To reduce health concerns, pregnant women should avoid arapaima fish from polluted areas, just as they would avoid mercury-contaminated seafood elsewhere.
