Background Of Anurag Agarwal
Anurag Agarwal, a seasoned officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre's 1998 batch, is currently serving as an inspector general in the Central Reserve Police Force. With considerable experience in law enforcement and internal security, Agarwal offers a plethora of knowledge and expertise to his new position as Parliament House's joint secretary (security).
Appointment Details
Mr. Agarwal's appointment was officially confirmed by an order issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, marking the end of a search for a suitable candidate to fill the vacancy that had existed since October 20. The job had been vacant since the departure of the former joint secretary, Raghubir Lal, who returned to his cadre. The job of JS (Security) is critical, historically held by an IPS officer, and is responsible for monitoring the Parliament's complete security structure.
Challenges And Responsibilities
Mr. Agarwal takes up his responsibilities at a time when the security of the Parliament House complex is being scrutinized. This follows an incident on December 13 in which two people managed to violate security standards by entering the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitors' gallery and discharging a can of yellow smoke. The episode has underlined the need for a full upgrade of security procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
