Algeria celebrated the grand opening of what has been dubbed "Africa's largest mosque" and the world's third largest mosque. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune presided over the ceremony, which officially designated the Great Mosque of Algiers as the world's third-largest mosque.
Djamaa El-Djazair: A Modernist Wonder
Djamaa El-Djazair is not only a mosque, but also an architectural and modernist marvel.
With the world's highest minaret (a tall, slender tower) reaching at 265 meters, this structure can accommodate 120,000 worshippers.
It was built over seven years on 27.75 hectares and boasts delicate wood and marble craftsmanship, demonstrating Algeria's architectural brilliance.
The mosque has been open to overseas tourists for five years, and its official inauguration marks the start of public prayers and celebrations, especially during Ramadan.
Despite its original opening in October 2020, which was overshadowed by President Tebboune's COVID-19 absence, it has since become a symbol of faith and national pride.
The construction, directed by a Chinese firm, cost an astounding $900 million.

Former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika suggested the mosque, and its inauguration marks the conclusion of his goal for a colossal legacy similar to Morocco's Mosque Hassan II.
However, Bouteflika's term was plagued by protests, which delayed the project and drew attention to its location and alleged corruption.
