The Forest Department of Uttar Pradesh's Gonda district, in conjunction with the Turtle Survival Alliance Foundation India, is launching a conservation campaign. This project attempts to create a turtle conservation reserve along the Sarju River, a tributary of the Ghaghra River. The Gonda district is noted for its turtle diversity, making it an excellent location for such a conservation endeavor.
Proposal & Monitoring
A proposal for the project has been submitted, based on six years of monitoring several turtle species and examining the surrounding flora.
The proposed reserve will comprise a 2-kilometer length of the Sarju River, which is home to a rich range of plant species, avifauna, fish, and water snakes.
Government Approval And Management Plan
The application has been submitted to the state government for approval. Upon approval, a 10-year management plan will be developed.
This plan will prioritize turtle conservation while also aiming to protect the region's overall biodiversity.
It includes the protection of around 30 fish species, 50 bird species, several flora, and two types of water snakes. Pollution reduction and river water quality improvement will be prioritized.
Unique Turtle Species
Shailendra Singh, Director of the Turtle Survival Alliance Foundation India, emphasized the Sarju River's biodiversity. Notably, Sarju is home to nine turtle species, eight of which are classified on Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act.
The presence of the 'crowned river turtle' (Hardella thurjii) is especially notable because it nests and lays eggs in river water, unlike other turtle species present in the area.
Conservation Challenges
Despite their ecological value, crowned river turtle populations have declined over the last two decades as a result of habitat degradation. Singh stressed the critical necessity for conservation efforts to reverse the decline.
According to recent monitoring studies, the Sarju river is home to around half of the adult crowned river turtle population, which is estimated to be 5,000.
Conservation Strategies
Shriparna Dutta, a Turtle Survival Alliance researcher, described the region's recognized turtle species and emphasized the importance of targeted conservation efforts.
The conservation program attempts to actively engage local communities while also maintaining their natural ecosystem.
Singh emphasized the necessity of empowering women through cultural fishery efforts, which promote self-sufficiency and act as a barrier to turtle hunting.
