A team of researchers discovered a new damselfly species in the Ponmudi hills of Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram district.
The Ponmudi Hills
Ponmudi, which translates as 'Golden Hill' or 'Golden Peak', is located in Kerala.
It is part of the Western Ghats mountain range, which runs parallel to the Arabian Sea and is 1100 metres above sea level.
The hills are part of the Agasthyamalai landscape, located at the southernmost tip of the Western Ghats.
Facts About The New Damselfly Species
It's called Cliffside Bambootail (Phylloneura rupestris).
It is a member of the bambootail family, so named for its long abdomen, which resembles bamboo stalks.
It lays eggs in moss beds along seasonal rills that run over rock cliffs.
The discovery is significant because, for over 160 years, the Phylloneura genus was thought to be monotypic, with only one described species, the Myristica Bambootail.
Myristica Bambootail's population is linked to myristica swamps, hence the common name Myristica Bambootail.
It is still the only described species in the Phylloneura genus and is classified as near-threatened by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
It is unique to the Western Ghats and has only been found between the Nilgiris Hills and Sharavathi Valley, north of the Palghat Gap.
