Description

The Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, demonstrates the country's recognition for great service and performance in all fields of human endeavour. This distinguished award, established in 1954, celebrates those who have made major contributions to the advancement of India, regardless of race, occupation, status, or gender.

Bharat Ratna Prize Money

Recipients of the Bharat Ratna are presented with a Sanad (certificate) signed by the President and a medallion as symbols of their outstanding contributions to their field and the nation. Notably, the award does not contain a monetary prize, highlighting its emphasis on recognizing exceptional service rather than offering financial compensation.

Facilities For Bharat Ratna Winners

Although the benefits of the Bharat Ratna award do not include monetary rewards, there are certain privileges, such as those listed below-

  • Bharat Ratna awardees receive the same treatment as government dignitaries when traveling across the country.

  • The Bharat Ratna advantages include an existing diplomatic passport, which is only provided to Indian ambassadors, high-ranking officers in government ministries, and diplomatic couriers. The diplomatic passport entitles them to a separate immigration station and access to a VIP lounge at airports.

  • They get lifetime access to fly in the executive class for free.

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs created the Table of Precedence for state and ceremonial occasions. This etiquette must be followed while hosting a public function in India. The Bharat Ratna winners have been placed at position 7A in this list, along with the President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, Governor of the relevant State, Former Presidents, Deputy Prime Ministers, and the Chief Justice of India, with the Speaker of Lok Sabha placed above them.

  • The award winner receives a medallion, a miniature, and a certificate signed by the President of India.

Eligibility And Nomination Process

A Universal Honour

The Bharat Ratna is unusual in its universality, accepting everyone regardless of background or occupation. This universal eligibility criterion ensures that the prize recognizes genuine merit and remarkable contributions to society.

Prime Ministerial Recommendations

The nomination process for the Bharat Ratna is unique, with the Prime Minister making recommendations directly to the President of India. Unlike many other prizes, no official recommendations are required, highlighting the award's status and the importance of the Prime Minister's decision.
