Description
In accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has suggested significant modifications to the curricular structure for Classes 9 through 12 as part of its creditisation effort. The new credit system is based on the National Curriculum Framework (NCrF), which the UGC introduced in 2022.
The board requested all CBSE-affiliated school principals to apply the new method in the later half of the previous year for review and feedback. Responses were expected to be received by December 5, 2023.
The goal of the new credit system is to achieve academic equivalency between vocational and general education, allowing for seamless transitions between the two educational systems.
Key Features Of CBSE’s New Credit System
Students and parents can learn about some of the important aspects of the CBSE's new credit system, which will be implemented in all affiliated schools.
Credits Each topic will be allocated a specific number of credits based on the amount of study time it required. A full academic year would consist of 40 credits, or 1200 notional study hours.
Learning Hours Notional learning hours are the amount of time a student would need to spend on a specific topic in order to meet the learning objectives for that subject. This would cover both in-class and out-of-class learning. The allocated hours include both academic and non-academic, or experiential, learning that occurs outside of the classroom.
Grading Students would be rated on a scale of A1 to E, with grades decided by their relative placement in the class. An A1 grade would be given to the top one-eighth of the students, an A2 to the next one-eighth, etc.
Flexibility Under the credit system, students would be able to choose their own courses and study schedules. They will be free to explore new topics and revisit those they enjoy.
Holistic Development By incorporating credits for extracurricular activities such as athletics, the arts, and community service, the credit system would emphasize holistic development.
When Will The CBSE Credit System Be Implemented?
CBSE is yet to specify when the new credit system will go into effect. However, sources indicate that this initiative may be implemented beginning with the following academic session. Classes 9 and 10 will have five topics, including two language subjects at seven credits each, two credits for physical education, and one credit for arts education. Similarly, out of six topics in grades 11 and 12, 6 credits will be provided for language subjects and 7 credits for other subjects, totaling 40.
