Description
The Central government has approved a new three-drug treatment regimen for leprosy patients, with the goal of eliminating disease transmission in India by 2027. The National Leprosy Eradication Programme is taking steps to implement this new regimen, which includes dapsone, rifampicin, and clofazimine.
Implementation Timeline
The new regimen will be introduced for all PB leprosy patients on April 1, 2025, replacing the existing two-drug regimen provided for six months. The WHO has agreed to deliver the upgraded medications, and states are being required to submit medicinal requisitions 12 months in advance.
Aim To Eradicate Leprosy
The goal is to eradicate leprosy in India by 2027, three years ahead of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals deadline. The implementation of this globally approved treatment strategy is a key step toward preventing leprosy transmission in India.
Regarding Leprosy
Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by the Mycobacterium leprae bacteria, which affects the skin and nerves. It can result in permanent disability if not treated. Droplets from the nose and mouth transmit infection when in close contact with untreated people. It can be cured with Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT).
Types Of Leprosy
There are two classifications- PB (with fewer visible bacteria and no symptoms of advanced disease). MB has visible bacteria and advanced illness symptoms. The new regimen will be administered to PB patients for six months and MB patients for twelve months.
MDT Drugs
The current recommended MDT consists of dapsone, rifampicin, and clofazimine. The World Health Organization delivers free MDT to patients all throughout the world. This consistent schedule facilitates treatment administration throughout leprosy programmes.
Need For A Three-Drug Regimen
According to experts, a two-drug regimen is effective treating PB leprosy and has minimal relapse rates, thus a third treatment may not be required. Clofazimine produces unpleasant side effects, including as skin discolouration. However, the government intends to completely accord with global treatment norms.
Eradication Efforts
The introduction of this new regimen represents a significant step forward in India's attempts to combat leprosy. The government and stakeholders anticipate that expanding MDT coverage would eliminate leprosy across the country within the next three years.
