Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced plans to open the world's first 'black tiger safari' at the Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) in Mayurbhanj. This imaginative effort intends to give tourists and visitors a unique view of melanistic tigers, often known as black tigers, who were recently spotted in Similipal National Park.
Melanistic Tigers: A Rare Breed Found Only In Odisha
Melanistic tigers, which feature a striking dark stripe pattern against a background of white or golden fur, have recently gained popularity in the Similipal region. Chief Minister Patnaik expressed enthusiasm for presenting these magnificent creatures, noting that this safari will be the only place in the world to see such a rare species.
Strategic Location And Layout Of The Safari
The projected safari location, which would be 200 hectares in size and located near Baripada, will be strategically adjacent to National Highway 18. The display zone will take up 100 hectares of this land, with the remainder used for vital infrastructure such as veterinary care facilities, a rescue center, worker comforts, and visitor services.
Home To Melanistic Tigers: Similipal Tiger Reserve
Susanta Nanda, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, emphasized the significance of Similipal Tiger Reserve, stating that it is the only natural habitat for melanistic tigers in the world. The chosen location, about 15 kilometers from the reserve, replicates the scenery of Similipal, creating an ideal setting for these uncommon creatures.
Safari Purpose And Residents: A Blend Of Conservation And Education
The safari seeks to house surplus tigers from Nandankanan Zoo, as well as rescued or orphaned tigers who are unfit for the wild but can be displayed in an open enclosure. This combination of conservation activities and educational programs is projected to draw a large number of people, adding to the allure of the Similipal Tiger Reserve.
Government Proposal And Regulatory Approvals
The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) approved the state government's proposal in principle, prompting the Chief Minister's declaration. To guarantee feasibility, an NTCA-appointed committee will undertake a detailed site visit before awarding final clearance. More regulatory permissions, including certification from the Central Zoo Authority, will follow suit.
