Kachchhi Kharek, an indigenous date variety from Gujarat's desert area of Kutch, was recently granted the renowned Geographical Indication (GI) status. This honor makes Kachchhi Kharek the second Gujarati fruit to receive such recognition, following the Gir Kesar mango.

Kutch accounts for 94% of Gujarat's date palm agriculture area, which spans 19,251 hectares. The region’s date palms flower in January-February, with the fresh dates (kharek) picked in June-July. The area's capacity to withstand harsh weather and high salinity tolerance make it suitable for date farming.
