In a historic first, two all-women defence force contingents will participate in India's 2024 Republic Day Parade, marking a landmark milestone in the country's journey toward gender equality and military empowerment. Leading The March: Captain Sandhya's Historic Role
Captain Sandhya will lead the all-female tri-services contingent of 148 people in this historic event. This team, which includes Agniveers and regular recruits, has been undergoing intense training in Delhi since early December, following two months of individual exercise at each base. Captain Sandhya, a 26-year-old officer who previously marched in the 2017 Republic Day parade as an NCC cadet, expressed her pride and fortune in being chosen to head this historic contingent.
The training for this event was difficult due to the differences in drills and procedures between the three services. However, under Captain Sandhya's leadership, the team has worked together to overcome these problems, ensuring that they are prepared for the parade. This work illustrates both their dedication and the changing role of women in the Indian military services.
Dual Representation Of Nari Shakti
In addition to the tri-service contingent, the parade will include a second all-female contingent from the Directorate General of the Armed Forces Medical Services. This group will be directed by female doctors and will include military nurses. This inclusion underscores the Indian government's commitment, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to promote Nari Shakti (women's empowerment) inside the military services.
