This winter, the Wular Lake has received between four to five lakh migrating birds, including seven new species.

About Wular Lake

  • This is India's largest freshwater lake.

  • It is situated in the Bandipora district of Jammu & Kashmir.

  • It is located near the northern end of the Valley of Kashmir, 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of Srinagar. 

  • It has a total area of 200 square kilometers, about 24 kilometers long and 10 kilometers wide. 

  • The Jhelum River feeds the lake basin, which formed as a result of geological activity.

  • The lake is at an elevation of 1,580 meters.

  • It is also believed to be a relic of Satisar Lake, which existed in ancient times. 

  • This lake also contains a little island in its center known as the 'Zaina Lank'. The island was built by King Zainul-Abi-Din.

  • It became a Ramsar site in 1990.

  • It is a river that travels across India and Pakistan.

  • It is a tributary to the Indus River.

  • It is the principal watercourse in the Kashmir Valley.

Course

  • Its source is the Verinag Spring in Anantnag, located at the foot of the Pir Panjal range in the Kashmir Valley.

  • It then runs through Srinagar and Wular Lake before entering Pakistan.

  • The river forms a deep, narrow gorge on its route to Pakistan.

  • It enters the Chenab River in Trimmu, Pakistan.

  • Its overall length is around 725 kilometers (450 miles).

  • Major tributaries include the Kishanganga (Neelum) River, Kunhar River, Sandran River, Bringi River, Arapath River, Watlara River, Lidder River, and Veshaw River.
