Description
A dying traditional game, given new life at the ongoing Karbi Youth Festival (KYF) in central Assam's Karbi Anglong district, has fueled a campaign to save a creeper known as African dream herb.
The African Dream Herb
A perennial climbing vine used by African traditional healers to induce vivid dreams and facilitate communication with their ancestors.
Entada rheedii, snuff box, African dream herb, and giant sea bean are some of its common names.
Its native range includes Africa, Asia, Australia, and Madagascar. It grows in tropical lowlands, along the coast and river banks, as well as woodland, thickets, and riverine rain forests.
Uses
A paste made from the leaves, bark, and roots is used to cleanse wounds, treat burns, and cure jaundice in children.
Tea made from the entire plant is used to improve blood circulation to the brain and treat stroke-related symptoms. The bark can be used to treat diarrhea, dysentery, and parasitic infections.
This creeper produces a dark brown and spherical seed, roughly the size of a human patella or kneecap, which is used to play 'Hambi Kepathu'. Associated with the Karbi community's origins.
Hambi Kepathu
It is also known as Simrit in some parts of Karbi Anglong, and is played on three rectangular courts by two teams of three players each. Each team member must place a 'hambi', or glazed creeper seed, vertically on the midpoint of his court's boundary line so that a player from the opposing team can hit it. Hambi Kepathu, named after the first syllables of the names of a Karbi sister-brother duo, is a male-only game similar to other traditional Karbi games like 'Pholong' (spinning top), 'Thengtom Langvek' (torch swimming), and 'Kengdongdang' (bamboo stilt race).
