Description
Madhya Pradesh won the unquestioned overall championship at the first-ever Beach Games 2024, which were held in Diu. The landlocked state won an outstanding total of 18 medals, including 7 golds, demonstrating the breadth of its athletic skill. The competition, which took place from January 4 to 11 at the beautiful Ghoghla Beach, included 1404 young athletes from 28 states and union territories competing in a variety of categories.
Medal Count Reflects National Participation
Maharashtra won 14 medals, including three golds, while Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, and hosts Dadra, Nagar Haveli, Diu, and Daman each won 12 medals. Notably, Assam excelled with eight medals, including five golds. Lakshadweep won gold in Beach Soccer, diversifying the medal tally and underscoring the inclusive spirit of the Diu Beach Games.

The festival featured a wide spectrum of sports, from strategic Tug of War to acrobatic Mallakhamb and the premiere of Beach Boxing, marking a watershed moment in India's athletic history. Anurag Thakur, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, praised the event's vitality and beauty, and expressed support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's aim to rejuvenate India's beaches.

India, which is endowed with beautiful beaches, now has 12 that have received Blue Flag accreditation for cleanliness and sustainable tourism, matching with the government's objective to encourage coastal sports and environmental awareness.
