Description

Astronomers have recently announced the discovery of an Earth-like planet, HD 63433d. It is an Earth-like exoplanet orbiting the sun-like star HD 63433 (also known as TOI 1726).

Regarding HD 63433d

  • The star is approximately 73 light years away from the Sun and is part of the constellation Ursa Major, which is made up of stars that move together.

  • The star HD 63433 is similar to our sun in size and type, but it is much younger, around 400 million years old. It is the youngest confirmed exoplanet, at less than 500 million years old.

  • It is also the closest Earth-sized planet discovered thus far, and it is approximately 400 million years old. It is also the closest Earth-sized planet discovered thus far, and it is approximately 400 million years old.

  • For comparison, Earth and the rest of our solar system are approximately 4.5 billion years old, so HD 63433 d appears to be only about 10% the age of our planet.

  • It is the third planet discovered in orbit around its star. This planet is eight times as close to its star as Mercury is to the Sun.

  • Because of its proximity to its star, which has 99% the mass of our sun, the planet is tidally locked, just like the moon is to Earth.

  • This means that one side of the planet, the dayside, is constantly exposed to the star and bombarded with stellar radiation, whereas the cooler nightside is constantly exposed to space.

  • This raises surface temperatures on the planet's dayside by around 2,300 degrees Fahrenheit (1,260 degrees Celsius). Its orbit is remarkably short, completing one full revolution around its star every 4.2 days.

  • This planet's atmosphere is unlikely to be substantial because it is so hot, so close to its star, and so small.
