A 19 million-year-old fossil jaw bone of a baleen whale estimated to be nine meters long has recently been discovered.

Baleen Whales

• These are any cetacean with unique epidermal modifications of the mouth known as baleen, which are used to filter food from water.

• Most mammals have teeth in their mouths. Baleen whales are an unusual exception.

• Baleen is a large rack of fine, hair-like keratin used to remove small krill from the water.

• This structure allowed baleen whales to feed efficiently on massive shoals of tiny zooplankton in productive parts of the ocean, facilitating the evolution of larger and larger body sizes.

• Baleen whales are generally larger than toothed whales, with the exception of the sperm whale, which is extremely large and has teeth.

• Many baleen whales migrate annually, covering long distances between cold water feeding areas and warm water breeding grounds.

• The large whale fossils from Australasia and South America appear to indicate that for the majority of baleen whale evolution, large baleen whales appear in the Southern Hemisphere fossil record.

• Baleen whales are ecosystem engineers, and their massive bodies consume enormous amounts of energy.

• After death, these whales provide an abundance of nutrients to deep-sea ecosystems.
