Description
The Conjoined Silverline, a beautiful new butterfly species defined by its glossy wing patterns, has been spotted in Karnataka's Kodagu district - the first such find in India's Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot since the 1970s.
Unique Characteristics
The Conjoined Silverline (Cigaritis conjuncta) is the name given to a newly found butterfly species based on the unusual markings on its wings. The term specifically alludes to the fused dots and bands seen on the undersides of the wings, which are intersected by eye-catching silvery lines running through the center of these bands.
First Sighting By Chance
The bug was discovered at Iruppu Falls in 2008 but remained unknown for nearly a decade.
Then, two years ago, researchers photographed and tested samples from dozens of them in the region's Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary to confirm the existence of a new species.
Highlighting Biodiversity
The Western Ghats' unexplored areas are home to over 500 mammals, 350 birds, and 179 amphibians, as well as many vibrant insects.
Despite significant documentation efforts, the current discovery after four dry decades confirms the wealth of the 1600 km mountain chain.
It also highlights advances in forest preservation in biodiverse Karnataka, where the butterfly thrives.
More Explorations Are Required
However, specialists anticipate that many more species await discovery through careful sampling that allows for DNA analysis of differences. They advocate for rigorous microbial, fungal, and invertebrate research that look beyond charismatic animals to examine ecosystem impact chains.
