Description

Three new frog species from Arunachal Pradesh's Namdapha-Kamlang protected area network along the Myanmar border have been identified by scientists. The discoveries highlight the importance of exploring unusual habitats.

The following new frog species have been discovered-

  • Gracixalus patkaiensis is a green tree frog with a translucent appearance and an insect-like call.

  • Alcalus fontinalis is a tiny brown frog that lives in fast-flowing hill streams and has a distinct trickling vocalization.

  • Nidirana noadihing is a marsh-dwelling "music frog" named after the Noa-Dihing river.

Within Namdapha-Kamlang's elevational gradient ecosystem, they occupy a variety of ecological niches ranging from rainforest understory to flowing brooks.

Why Are Names Inspired By Habitat Important?

The frogs get their names from the local hill ranges, bodies of water, and secretive ecological pockets that they inhabit. According to conservationists, such habitat-linked denominations can inspire location-specific biodiversity ownership and community participation in protecting new species.

For example, Kerala's iconic Purple Frog is named after the local Mahabali legend, elevating its cultural status.

Identifying Biodiversity Hotspot

Namdapha National Park and the Kamlang Tiger Reserve are located between India and Myanmar. Namdapha Tiger Reserve is the northernmost tropical rainforest experiment, containing unique crossover biodiversity between the Eastern Himalayas and Southeast Asia. This region has low tropical forests up to 5000-meter-high Himalaya-like mountains.

The new discoveries bring India's amphibian species count to around 470. Over 100 more are expected to be discovered in vulnerable habitats such as the Western Ghats, according to scientists. Researchers discovered both Southeast Asian and Himalayan animals at various elevations. However, more research is required to determine where each species lives. Human activity poses a threat to the area. As a result, new species discoveries raise conservation concerns.

The Next Steps

Further exploration of Namdapha-Kamlang's unexplored peaks may yield more discoveries. For area conservation, the teams envision field guides and biodiversity stories that highlight ecological uniqueness.
