A controversy has erupted over Notre Dame's plan to replace some stained-glass windows with modern designs

The Proposal Of President Macron

Macron agreed completely adding that the current windows by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc would be preserved in a new Notre Dame Museum exhibit. During the 2019 fire, the identified windows were unharmed.

Over 122,000 people signed an online petition in just two weeks demanding that the original stained-glass windows be preserved. According to critics, Viollet-le-Duc intended these to blend in with the overall Gothic architectural vision.

Changing them would put at risk Notre Dame's historic value and beauty. Instead, more appropriate locations within the cathedral complex could exist for contemporary stained glass that also honors the brave firefighters.

Resolving Issues

While incorporating modern elements is appropriate, they should not override Viollet-le-Duc's consistent design and vision. Stained glass experts highlight the exceptional craftsmanship of the current chapel windows that require protection.

However, new stained glass in the fire-ravaged north tower can pay respectful tribute to firefighters' bravery and sacrifice while also giving visitors something new to admire! These solutions demonstrate how heritage and modernity can coexist through compromise.
