Himachal Pradesh Police recently arrested an SUV owner for reportedly driving his car across the Chandra River in the district of Lahaul and Spiti.
About Chandra River
- It is one of two rivers (the other being the Bhaga River) that join to form the Chenab River in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul area.
Course
It originates among the snows at the base of the main Himalayan range in the Himachal Pradesh districts of Lahaul and Spiti.
It flows southeasterly for a substantial distance at the foot of this ridge before turning totally south-westerly in the Spiti Valley.
It then joins the Bhaga River downstream of Keylong.
At its source, the lovely Chandra Tal Lake has created.
The upper and middle catchments of this river have been sculpted out by glacial action.
The entire region is a huge, frigid desert that receives little or no rain due to its location in the rain shadow of the Himalayan Pir Panjal range.
The river is fed by a number of glaciers throughout its course, the largest of which are the Shigri on its left bank and the Samundari on its right.
Several minor snow-fed tributaries enter the Chandra at various points.
The only significant human settlement along this river is Koksar.
