On December 22, India will experience the longest night of the year, known as the Winter Solstice.
The Winter Solstice
The winter solstice is the year's shortest day.
Because the Earth's axis is inclined 23.4 degrees, whether the Earth's pole is pointed towards or away from the Sun throughout the day, the arc the Sun travels through will rise and fall during the year.
The Winter Solstice occurs when one of Earth's poles is far from the Sun.
It is observed on December 21st or 22nd in the Northern Hemisphere and June 20th or 21st in the Southern Hemisphere.
The term solstice is derived from the Latin word solstitium, where'sol' refers to the Sun and'stitium' means to come to a halt.
The days are the shortest during the winter solstice. The length of daylight varies from country to country.
The winter solstice is significant in many cultures because it represents the Sun's metaphorical death and rebirth. Stonehenge and other ancient structures are aligned with dawn or sunset on the winter solstice.

It occurs when the northern half of the Earth is tilted away from the sun the most.
The northern hemisphere will have the fewest hours of sunlight, making it the shortest day of the year and the longest night.
Every day after the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere will grow longer until the summer solstice, or the longest day of the year, between June 20 and 22.
The event will also coincide with the peak of the Ursid meteor shower, which happens annually over the northern hemisphere when the Earth passes through debris left by comet 8P/Tuttle.
