Description
The ongoing turmoil in Ukraine poses a severe threat to the survival of the wisent, also known as the European wood bison, the last surviving member of Europe's megafauna. Conservation initiatives, particularly in Ukraine and Russia, were providing hope for the reintroduction of this endangered species. However, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which begins on February 24, 2022, puts their efforts in jeopardy. Ukraine is home to more than half of the world's free-roaming bison.
Historical Range
The wisent, which was previously common in Europe during the last ice age, faced dramatic population collapse and extinction in the wild by 1927, with only around 60 individuals remaining in captivity.
Extinction Factors
The report, "Millennial processes of population decline, range contraction, and near extinction of the European bison," blames rapid environmental change and human hunting for the wisent's extinction across Europe.
Analysis Of Simulations
55,000 simulations were run, incorporating paleoclimate data, habitat information, human population dynamics, and bison dispersal patterns. Firearms, which were introduced in the 1500s, hastened the species' extinction.
Appropriate Rewilding Areas
The researchers recommend specific regions for wisent rewilding, including sections of Poland, Ukraine, western Russia, the Balkans, and Germany. These sites correspond to historical ecosystems and provide ideal conditions for the species.
