India has completed flight testing of an indigenous high-speed flying-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)

The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) recently accomplished a critical milestone by successfully flying the Autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator, an indigenous high-speed flying-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). With this successful display, India joins a small group of countries that have mastered the controls for flying wing technology.

The Defence Ministry said on Friday that the DRDO successfully flew the autonomous flying wing technology demonstration in Chitradurga, Karnataka. With this accomplishment, India joins an elite group of countries that have mastered the controls for flying wing technology, demonstrating a significant leap in the country's technological preparedness levels.

DRDO Development

The UAV designed and developed by the DRDO's Aeronautical Development Establishment, represents a significant advancement in India's aeronautical capabilities. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the DRDO, military forces, and industry for the successful flight test, highlighting the need of bolstering the armed forces through indigenous development of essential technology.

Flight Experiments And Technological Advances

The aircraft made its initial flight in July 2022, and was followed by six subsequent flight testing in various developmental configurations, using two in-house constructed prototypes. Aerodynamics, control systems, real-time simulation, hardware-in-the-loop simulation, and ground control stations were improved as a result of these trials. India's control mastery of flying wing technology was proved in the last flight in the tailless version.

Aerospace Technology Exhibition

The UAV prototype has a complicated arrowhead wing platform made of lightweight carbon prepreg composite material developed in-house. The composite structure, which is outfitted with fiber interrogators for health monitoring, is a tribute to 'Aatmanirbharta' (self-reliance) in aerospace technology, demonstrating India's ability to create and manufacture innovative materials on its own.

Autonomous Landing Capacity

The UAV's autonomous landing capabilities is one of its most notable characteristics, as it eliminates the need for ground radars, infrastructure, or a pilot. This one-of-a-kind capability enables takeoff and landing from any runway with surveyed coordinates. The self-driving landing was made possible by combining onboard sensor data with indigenous satellite-based augmentation employing GPS-aided and GEO Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) receivers, which improved GPS navigation accuracy and integrity.
