With the operationalization of the world's deepest and largest subterranean laboratory, China has achieved a key milestone in the field of physics. The physics laboratory, known as the Deep Underground and Ultra-low Radiation Background Facility for Frontier Physics Experiments (DURF), reaches a remarkable depth of 2,400 meters, according to a report.
Getting To The Bottom Of Things: Location And Structure
DURF, which is part of the second phase of the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, has a total room capacity of 330,000 cubic meters.
This underground wonder is the result of three years of extensive renovations and expansion, with construction slated to begin in December 2020.
Tsinghua University and Yalong River Hydropower Development Company, Ltd. partnered to develop the facility, which gives scientists with testing conditions that are not available anywhere else.

One of the primary goals of DURF is to contribute significantly to the global search for dark matter, which is a mystery substance that appears to defy contact with light or the electromagnetic field.

Yue Qian, a professor at Tsinghua University, emphasized the relevance of the location, stating that DURF is exposed to a very minuscule amount of cosmic rays—only one hundred-millionth of that found on Earth's surface.
