With the operationalization of the world's deepest and largest subterranean laboratory, China has achieved a key milestone in the field of physics. The physics laboratory, known as the Deep Underground and Ultra-low Radiation Background Facility for Frontier Physics Experiments (DURF), reaches a remarkable depth of 2,400 meters, according to a report.
Getting To The Bottom Of Things: Location And Structure
DURF, which is part of the second phase of the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, has a total room capacity of 330,000 cubic meters.
This underground wonder is the result of three years of extensive renovations and expansion, with construction slated to begin in December 2020.
Tsinghua University and Yalong River Hydropower Development Company, Ltd. partnered to develop the facility, which gives scientists with testing conditions that are not available anywhere else.
Investigating The Mystery Of Dark Matter
One of the primary goals of DURF is to contribute significantly to the global search for dark matter, which is a mystery substance that appears to defy contact with light or the electromagnetic field.
Scientists believe that the high depth of DURF will be critical in this effort since it will effectively shield most cosmic rays that could interfere with studies. Because of this strategic advantage, DURF has the potential to be a game changer in deep-earth experiments.
Shielding From Cosmic Intrusions
Yue Qian, a professor at Tsinghua University, emphasized the relevance of the location, stating that DURF is exposed to a very minuscule amount of cosmic rays—only one hundred-millionth of that found on Earth's surface.
This feature enables the facility to provide an unprecedented setting for conducting research free of cosmic disturbance.
State-Of-The-Art Facilities
DURF takes pride in a number of key characteristics that enhance its scientific capabilities. Ultra-low cosmic ray flux, extremely low ambient radiation, unusually low radon concentration, and ultra-clean space are examples of these.
These characteristics combine to create an excellent environment for precise experiments, allowing scientists to dive into the complexities of physics with unparalleled clarity.
From Concept To Reality: Historical Context
The first phase of the China Jinping Underground Laboratory was completed at the end of 2010, paving the way for the establishment of DURF.
This initial phase, with a room capacity of around 4,000 cubic meters, lay the groundwork for future advances.
According to reports, the facility has already made major contributions to China's dark matter direct detection tests, achieving notable scientific results.
