Description

Mumps incidences in youngsters have recently increased in the states of Maharashtra and Telangana, causing alarm among parents.

About Mumps

  • A paramyxovirus causes this infectious sickness.

  • It can cause the parotid glands, which are located on each side of the face, to expand and become uncomfortable or unpleasant.

  • It is a severe disease that primarily affects children and young people.

  • Mumps virus is only known to infect humans and is transferred by direct touch or airborne droplets from infected individuals' upper respiratory tracts.

Symptoms

  • Mumps begins with non-specific symptoms such as myalgia, headache, malaise, and low-grade fever after a 2 to 4 week incubation period.

  • Within days, these symptoms are followed by unilateral or bilateral swelling of the parotid salivary glands, with 10% of cases affecting other salivary glands.

  • Mumps is often a minor, self-limiting condition that resolves without complications.

  • However, problems such as encephalitis or sensorineural deafness may arise.

  • Orchitis (painful inflammation of the testicles) affects 20% of young adult males who contract mumps.

Treatment

  • There is no specific treatment. Medicines can help with a variety of symptoms.

Prevention

  • The greatest approach to safeguard children is to have them immunized against mumps.
