Description

In Afghanistan, children's academic activities increasingly include Channapatna toys.

About Channapatna Toys

  • Channapatna toys are a type of wooden toy and doll made in the town of Channapatna in the Ramanagara district of Karnataka.

  • Gombegala Ooru (toy-town) is another name for Channapatna.

  • The origins of Channapatna toys may be traced back to Tipu Sultan's tenure as the former monarch of the Kingdom of Mysore in the 18th century.

  • Tipu Sultan, tradition has it, was so pleased with the craftsmanship of Persian artisans that he invited them to teach local craftsmen how to make toys.

  • This marked the start of the Channapatna toy industry, which has since thrived.

Features

  • The majority of these toys are handcrafted utilizing traditional processes passed down from generation to generation, ensuring that each piece is one-of-a-kind.

  • They are traditionally fashioned primarily of Ivory Wood taken from neighboring forests. However, sandalwood and mango wood are also utilized nowadays.

  • They are also painted with organic colors drawn from vegetables and plants, as well as natural dyes, making Channapatna Toys chemical-free.

  • They are entirely safe for children because their shapes are usually spherical and cubes with blunt edges.

  • In 2005, they were granted the geographical indicator (GI) label.
