About Ranthambore National Park

  • It is situated in the Sawai Madhopur district in southeastern Rajasthan.

  • It is located near the confluence of the Aravali and Vindhya mountain ranges.

  • It was once the hunting grounds of Jaipur's Maharajas.

  • It gets its name from the Ranthambore Fort, which is located within its boundaries.

  • Ranthambore National Park was established on November 1, 1980, with the adjacent forests called Sawai Man Singh Sanctuary and Keladevi Sanctuary.

Landscape

  •  It is distinguished by rocky terrain, dense forests, lakes, and old ruins.

Vegetation

  • Due to its steep terrain, Ranthambhore's vegetation is tropical dry deciduous and tropical thorn type; water is confined to narrow valleys and a few lakes.

Rivers

  • The park is bounded by rivers: the Chambal River in the south and the Banas River in the north.

  • Padam Talab, Raj Bagh Talab, and Malik Talab are three lakes in the park.

Flora

  • The 'Dhok' is the most dominant plant. This tropical tree accounts for over three-quarters of the vegetation in this national forest.

  • Aside from the Dhok tree, other notable trees in this park include Banyan, Pipal, and Neem.

Fauna

  • The Bengal tiger is its most famous species.

  • Apart from tigers, the leopard, nilgai, wild boar, sambar, hyena, sloth bear, and chital are the most important wild animals.
