Description
The Indian Forest & Wood Certification Scheme was just inaugurated by the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change.
About The Indian Forest And Wood Certification Scheme
This national forest certification scheme provides voluntary third-party certification with the goal of encouraging sustainable forest management and agroforestry throughout the country.
The plan includes forest management certification, tree certification outside of forest management, and chain of custody certification.
It has the potential to provide market incentives to a variety of companies who use responsible forest management and agroforestry methods in their operations.
Parties involved
State forest departments, individual farmers or Farmer Producer Organizations active in agroforestry and farm forestry, and other wood-based industries in the value chain are all included.
The Forest Management certification is based on the Indian Forest Management Standard, which includes eight criteria, 69 indicators, and 254 verifiers and is part of the National Working Plan Code 2023, which was released earlier this year.
A new Trees outside Forests Standard has been introduced.
The Indian Forest and Wood Certification Council, which will serve as a multistakeholder advisory organization, will monitor it.
Members of the Council represent eminent institutions such as the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, the Forest Survey of India, the Quality Council of India, and the Indian Institute of Forest Management, as well as representatives from the Ministries of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare and Commerce and Industry, State Forest Departments, Forest Development Corporations, and representatives from wood-based industries.
The Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal, will serve as the scheme's operating agency and will be in charge of overall management.
The Quality Council of India's National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies will accredit the certification bodies that will conduct out independent audits and assess adherence of various entities to the standards established under the scheme.
