Description
The ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute (ICAR-IVRI), Izatnagar, Bareilly, recently discovered the precise status of elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV) and its subtypes circulating among Asian elephant populations in India.
Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus Facts
It is a double-stranded DNA virus that belongs to the Herpesviridae family.
It causes hemorrhagic illness in both wild and captive Asian and African elephants.
It is deadly for young elephants aged one to twelve.
The disease is usually fatal after a 28-35-hour duration.
Transmission Direct contact with sick elephants' body fluids (saliva, shedding from skin lesions, etc.)
Symptoms It include decreased appetite, nasal discharge, and swollen glands in some elephants.
Treatment It consists of a combination of antiviral therapy, aggressive fluid therapy (to prevent hemorrhaging), immunostimulant drugs (selenium and vitamins C and E), antipyretics, and analgesics (to reduce fever).
There is no true cure for herpesviruses in animals or in people since herpes viruses go latent.
