Singapore has awarded three remarkable persons the prestigious Cultural Medallion, recognizing their artistic excellence and major contributions to the country's rich arts and culture. Meira Chand, an Indian-origin writer, shares this prestigious award with novelist Suchen Christine Lim and Malay dance veteran Osman Abdul Hamid.

In a ceremony conducted at the Istana, President Tharman Shanmugaratnam presented the Cultural Medallion to the honorees. The prize, the city-state's highest arts distinction, comes with an SGD 80,000 grant for each awardee to help them continue their artistic activities.
Meira Chand: A Literary Trailblazer
Multicultural Novelist Meira Chand, of Swiss-Indian ancestry, is well-known for her award-winning novels reflecting mixed cultures. Her novel 'The Painted Cage' (1986) was nominated for the Booker Prize.
Historic Recognition Meira Chand, together with Lim, is the first English-language female writer to earn the Cultural Medallion since Ho Minfong in 1997.
Life And Journey Meira Chand was born in London to a Swiss mother and an Indian father, and her literary path was affected by her experiences in Japan, where she taught art, and in India, where she spent five years, which she describes as a "life-changing experience." Her writing represents her personal discovery of identity and cultural diversity.
A Prestigious Honor: A Cultural Medallion
The Cultural Medallion was established in 1979 by the late President and then Minister of Culture, Ong Teng Cheong, and is Singapore's highest arts honor.
