A scientist from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) recently found a new plant species of 'wild okra' called 'Abelmoschus Odishae'.
About The Abelmoschus Odishae
It is a new 'wild okra' plant species.
It was discovered in a damp deciduous forest in the Banspal block of Odisha's Keonjhar district.
It can be utilized to generate a superior variety with great disease resistance by hybridisation.
It can also help to diversify the genetic base of okra.
Features
It is a 5 metre tall perennial shrub with a heavily hispid, spiky stem covered with retrorse hairs.
It blooms with big, vivid yellow flowers.
It bears sub-reniform seeds with short, stout trichomes that are not spiral.
It also has a seed viability of 95 percent.

Okra is a warm-season vegetable which is also known as gumbo or ladies' fingers.
It is native to the Eastern Hemisphere's tropics and is widely cultivated or naturalized in the Western Hemisphere's tropics and subtropics.

It is high in minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber.
Okra has a delicate flavor and a distinct texture, with a peach-like fuzz on the outside. Small, edible seeds are contained within the pod.
It has a sticky juice that is used to thicken sauces.
