Recent US Geological Survey (USGS) publications have attracted attention to a series of earthquakes happening beneath Mount St. Helens, raising concerns about the region's volcanic activity.
Unprecedented Earthquake Activity
Approximately 400 earthquakes have been recorded beneath Mount St. Helens since mid-July of this year.
This seismic sequence is thought to be the longest since the volcano's previous eruption in 2008.
Concerns have been raised, however there are currently no indicators of a volcanic explosion.
The USGS Statement
The USGS addressed the situation in a webpage update, acknowledging the increase in earthquakes.
The majority of the recorded earthquakes are minor, measuring less than M1.0, and are not felt on the surface.
According to the USGS, there is no immediate cause for concern because ground deformation and gas emissions remain within typical (green) background levels.
Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN) Monitoring
The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network has been keeping a close eye on earthquakes and volcanic activity in the area.
They have identified almost 400 earthquakes since mid-July, with roughly 30 earthquakes discovered per week recently.
This is in contrast to the period after 2008, when Mount St. Helens saw an average of 11 earthquakes every month.
Historical Background
Mount St. Helens' devastating eruption in 1980 killed 57 people and caused enormous devastation.
A 5.1 magnitude earthquake triggered the eruption, which resulted in the greatest landslide in recorded history.
While the current earthquake activity is troubling, it is critical to distinguish between historical events and the current scenario.
Sensitivity And Magnitude
The majority of the recent earthquakes, which occurred over a three-month period, had magnitudes less than 1.0.
These minor tremors are usually imperceptible at the surface.
These mild earthquakes, according to volcano seismologist Wes Thelen, may signal magma movement and "recharging" of the volcano's subterranean chambers and cracks.
