Description

According to a recent report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP), acute food insecurity is on the rise in 18 hunger hotspots. The research covers the period from November 2023 to April 2024, and these hotspots encompass 22 countries and territories. The hotspots were chosen based on expert opinion and a consideration of several parameters.

Identifying The Hotspots

Burkina Faso, Mali, Sudan, South Sudan, Niger, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Palestine, Syrian Arab Republic, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Djibouti, Yemen, Somalia, Ethiopia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Haiti, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua are among the countries and territories mentioned in the report. Food security is predicted to deteriorate severely in all of these locations over the next six months.

Areas Of Greatest Concern

Due to growing war and bloodshed, four African countries—Burkina Faso, Mali, South Sudan, and Sudan—are at the highest level of concern. Furthermore, due to a dramatic escalation of fighting in the Gaza Strip in October 2023, Palestine was placed to the list of greatest concern areas.

Key Drivers And High-Risk Areas

The research identifies Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, Pakistan, Somalia, the Syrian Arab Republic, and Yemen as high-risk areas. Conflict, arid climatic conditions, economic shocks, high food prices, and extreme weather occurrences are key contributors of food insecurity in these places.

Impact Of Weather Extremes

Weather extremes such as severe rainfall, tropical storms, cyclones, flooding, drought, and increased climatic variability continue to have an important role in causing acute food insecurity in specific nations and regions.

Escalating Food Insecurity In Mali And Burkina Faso

Mali and Burkina Faso, which are currently suffering from extreme food insecurity, are projected to have significant increases during the forecast time frame. Escalating violence is worsening these regions' already severe access limits.

Persistent Food Insecurity In South Sudan

Even after harvests begin in October, South Sudan is anticipated to face alarming levels of food insecurity. This is owing to inadequate crop output, high staple food costs, and a lack of resources to support returning Sudanese populations.

Sudan's Ongoing Food Crisis

Sudan is still dealing with a food crisis as a result of the destructive consequences of violence on livelihoods, agriculture, and the economy. Between April and October 2023, 4.4 million people were internally displaced, exacerbating significant food insecurity.

The Importance Of Humanitarian Response

The report emphasizes the necessity of preventing the worsening of acute food insecurity and malnutrition. However, humanitarian access continues to be hampered in a variety of ways, including insecurity as a result of organized violence, administrative obstacles, and movement restrictions.

Recommendations

The report provides country-specific recommendations for emergency response and preventive measures to address existing humanitarian needs and provide short-term protective initiatives before new needs arise. The report's material is based on data accessible through October 17, 2023.
