Description

In a groundbreaking move, 11 Asian and South American countries have signed the "Global Declaration for River Dolphins," which aims to protect the world's six remaining river dolphin species.

About Global Declaration For River Dolphins

  • The purpose of this declaration is to guide 14 nations where river dolphins live, with an emphasis on responsible freshwater dolphin conservation.

  • It aims to reverse the loss of all river dolphin species while also increasing the most vulnerable populations.

  • The declaration will strengthen cooperation efforts to protect the remaining river dolphin species.

  • Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, Cambodia, Colombia, Ecuador, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Peru, and Venezuela are among the countries that have signed the declaration.

  • The countries concerned promised to enhance water quality in the dolphins' habitat, establish protected areas, combat overfishing, and work with Indigenous groups in the impacted areas to conserve the creatures.

Facts About River Dolphins

  • River dolphins are any of six species of freshwater aquatic animals related to whales (Order Cetacea).

  • The Chinese river dolphin, also known as the baiji, was declared extinct in 2007.

  • These dolphins can be found in rivers in south-central Asia, China, and South America, as well as in coastal waters in Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay.

  • All the species have feature small eyes, slender beaks lined with teeth, flexible necks and bodies, distinct forehead melons, huge flippers, and short dorsal fins.

  • The Amazon, Indus, Ganges, Irrawaddy, Tucuxi, and Yangtze finless porpoises are the six remaining river dolphin species.

  • The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species classifies all six river dolphin species as Endangered or Critically Endangered.

  • The Amazon River dolphin (Inia geoffrensis) is the largest.

  • They are key indicators of river health. Wherever freshwater dolphin populations thrive, river systems are likely to thrive as well.
