Description
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's principal immunization initiative is Intensified Mission Indradhanush (IMI 5.0). This campaign targets unvaccinated children and pregnant women to ensure they acquire the necessary immunizations.
Expanded Coverage
For the first time, IMI 5.0 has been extended to all districts in the country. Additionally, it now covers children up to the age of 5, whereas previous campaigns only covered children up to the age of 2.
Campaign Objectives
The goal of IMI 5.0 is to increase coverage of all vaccines listed in the Universal Immunization Program (UIP) in accordance with the National Immunization Schedule (NIS). The focus has been on improving vaccination rates against measles and rubella, with the aim of eradicating them by 2023. Additionally, the U-WIN digital platform is being tested for routine vaccinations in all the districts.
Schedule and Dhifts
The campaign is organized in three cycles, each lasting six days, with an additional day of routine immunization:
7-12 August
11-16 September
9-14 October
All states and Union Territories, except Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Punjab, will complete the campaign by October 14, 2023. These four states have faced delays and will complete their campaign in November 2023.
Progress Report
As of September 30, 2023, over 34.69 lakh children and around 6.55 lakh pregnant women have received vaccinations under the first two rounds of IMI 5.0.
On-The-Spot Efforts
Officials from DHS FW and SIO Assam inspected the sites in Darrang district, Assam.
In Sikkim, monitoring was carried out to assess the immunization status in relief camps.
The vaccination sessions were held in Manipur and Himachal Pradesh.
Preparation and Training
A readiness assessment for IMI 5.0 was conducted between July 19 and 23, 2023 in 154 high priority districts across 27 states/Union Territories. A national workshop was held in the capital on June 23, 2023 to inform all states/UTs about the campaign. Additionally, operational guidelines and a comprehensive communication strategy have been shared with all states/UTs.
Social Awareness
The campaign's communications strategy took a 360-degree approach, including advocacy, addressing vaccine hesitancy and engaging local influencers. To spread the message, extensive information material has been made available to be translated into local languages. Interestingly, many social media influencers and Jan pratinidhi actively encouraged the public to participate in the campaign.
Historical Impact
Since 2014, 11 phases of Mission Indradhanush have been deployed across the country. So far, over 5.06 crore children and 1.25 crore pregnant women have been vaccinated under this initiative in the ongoing 12th phase.
