About Sayeret Matkal
Sayeret Matkal, commonly known as General Staff Reconnaissance Unit 269, is an Israeli Defense Force (IDF) special commando unit.
Avraham Arnan, the unit's first commander, initiated its formation in 1957.
It is based on the Special Air Service (SAS), a Special Forces unit of the British army, with the regiment's motto "Who Dares Wins" as its inspiration.
Sayeret Matkal is a field intelligence collection unit tasked with deep reconnaissance beyond enemy lines as well as counter-terrorism and hostage rescue operations beyond Israel's borders.
It reports directly to the Directorate of Military Intelligence's Special Operations Branch.
Israel only recognized its own existence in the 1980s.
They have reportedly collaborated with other special Israeli forces such as Sayeret Tzanhanim, Flotilla 13, and Sayeret Golani.
It is well known for saving 100 Israelis from Palestinian hijackers during the 1976 Entebbe airport raid in Uganda.
