Description

Every year, the second Thursday of October celebrates World Sight Day, a significant event on the global calendar. This day is dedicated to increasing public awareness of vision impairment and blindness. It falls on October 12th this year. This World Sight Day, we're focusing on helping individuals understand the importance of maintaining their vision at work and urging business leaders to prioritize worker eye health everywhere.

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment's Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) is the focal department for the country's Persons with Disabilities development agenda. The Department is honoring World Sight Day on October 12th, 2023, through the institutions linked with it, by hosting various events across the country, with the objective of raising public awareness about visual impairment.

World Sight Day Theme 2023

'Love Your Eyes at Work,' the theme for World Sight Day 2023, resonates well in our fast-paced, digital age, where we increasingly strain our eyes through prolonged screen time and rigorous work schedules. It underlines the significance of caring for our eyes while managing the current workplace's obstacles.

History Of World Sight Day

World Sight Day originated on October 8, 1984, when the Lions Club Foundation established this awareness day. Over time, it expanded into a global collaborative effort directed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IABP), comprising non-governmental organizations (NGOs), eye care organizations, and hospitals. This united front aims to raise awareness about the importance of eye care and blindness prevention.

The Importance Of World Sight Day 2023

In the perspective of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), World Sight Day is extremely important. It makes a substantial contribution to education, employment, quality of life, and poverty reduction aims. The occasion serves as a reminder of the importance of vision in the general well-being of individuals and societies. Various organizations actively participate, lobbying for increased global access to eye care services.

Maintaining and enhancing your eye health is crucial, and here are some key recommendations for achieving and preserving good eyesight-

  • Balanced Nutrition: Eat a well-balanced diet rich in critical vitamins and minerals, especially those that promote eye health, such as vitamins A, C, and E.

  •  Maintain a Healthy Weight: Maintaining a healthy weight is critical since excess weight increases the risk of eye-related illnesses such as diabetes, which can lead to vision problems.

  •  Regular Physical Activity: Incorporate regular physical activity into your lifestyle to support general well-being, including eye health.

  •  Protective Eye Gear: Wear sunglasses that provide good UV protection while exposed to the sun to safeguard your eyes from any sun-induced damage.

  • Give Your Eyes a Break: To avoid eye strain from prolonged computer use, use the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to stare at something 20 feet away.

  • Say No to Smoking: Smoking is linked to a number of eye problems, including macular degeneration and cataracts.

  • Contact Lens Care: If you wear contact lenses, make sure to adhere to the suggested cleaning measures to avoid infections and maintain eye health.
