Description

The United Service Institution of India (USI), the country's oldest think tank, will organize the first Indian Military Heritage Festival (IMHF) on October 21 and 22. Through the Atmanirbhar Bharat programs, this pioneering event strives to fill a gap in the national discourse and cultural calendar by putting attention on India's rich military past, modern security concerns, and the quest of self-reliance in military capabilities.

Unveiling Military Heritage of India

The IMHF aims to deepen our understanding of India's vast military heritage and traditions. Various aspects are examined, including indigenous historical knowledge systems, India's role in the world wars, post-independence challenges, and perspectives on war and conflict. Through in-depth discussions, the festival aims to create awareness among participants from all walks of life about the various dimensions of India's military history.

Addressing Knowledge Gaps

Despite the growing interest of the Indian population in military history, there remains a significant knowledge gap about Indian military systems, their customs and their history. The aim of the IMHF is to fill these gaps and improve our understanding of the complex relationships between war, the armed forces and society. It is in line with the Army's Project Udbhav, a joint effort with USI to uncover India's ancient statecraft and strategic wisdom from historical texts.

Educating Future Thought Leaders

The primary objective of the IMHF is to educate "future thought leaders" on the global dynamics of national security, with a focus on India's strategic culture, military heritage, education, security force modernization and Atmanirbhar Bharat. Through sessions and discussions, the festival will delve into various topics including military history, contemporary security issues, welfare of the armed forces and the role of Atmanirbhar Bharat in the defense sector.

Charting a Path for the Future

Over two days of engaging discussions, the IMHF will explore how we perceive our military history, contemporary security challenges and the role of self-reliance in defense. It will also showcase India's culture of courage and seek to develop an indigenous strategic vocabulary rooted in the country's rich culture and history, paving the way for a more secure future.

A Showcase Full of Achievements

In collaboration with the National Museum, IMHF will organize an exhibition highlighting some of the achievements of India's long military history. This exhibition celebrates the country's enduring and illustrious military heritage. The Indian Military Heritage Festival is set to become a landmark event that will not only honor India's military heritage but also foster a deeper understanding of its significance in contemporary times.

About United Service Institute of India

The history of the United Service Institution of India, founded in 1870 by Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor, a learned soldier, is closely linked to the development of the Indian armed forces. Its primary mission was to promote interest in and knowledge of the arts, sciences and literature of the defense forces. It was originally located in the old Town Hall at Shimla, nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas. Later, the institution was transferred to the army headquarters. Major General BK Sharma is the Director General of the United Service Institution of India (USI).
