PowerPoint was created by Dennis Austin and Robert Gaskins and introduced in 1987.
Austin and Gaskins were both employees of Forethought, a software firm that Microsoft later purchased for $14 million, not long after PowerPoint, formerly known as Presenter, debuted.
In the beginning, PowerPoint was only available for the Macintosh platform.
About the Career of Dennis R. Austin
From 1985 to 1996, Dennis R. Austin served as the lead software developer for the development of PowerPoint, concentrating on versions for Apple Macintosh computers.
After working for Honeywell in Massachusetts and Burroughs in California, he started his career in the computer division of General Electric in Arizona.
In late 1984, he joined Forethought, Inc. as a software developer for Gavilon Computer.
At Forethought, Robert Gaskins spearheaded the development of graphical presentation software that became PowerPoint, with Austin serving as the lead developer.
Along with Austin, Tom Rudkin joined the PowerPoint project and made substantial programming contributions.
Microsoft bought Forethought in 1987, and Austin remained the lead PowerPoint developer until 1996.
