A stunning 27-foot-tall statue of Nataraja, Lord Shiva in his cosmic dance, will welcome world leaders to the G20 Summit's location. It takes a trailer with 36 tires to transport this magnificent sculpture to Delhi because it weighs an incredible 18 tonnes and is made of the eight-metal alloy ashtadhatu. This masterpiece, created by expert craftsmen from Swamimalai in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district, draws inspiration from ancient Nataraja idols and seamlessly combines tradition and modernity.
Master Sculptors From Swamimalai
A group of artisans from Swamimalai, a town renowned for its traditional metalwork, painstakingly crafted the Nataraja statue.
The three main sculptors of this masterpiece are Radhakrishna Sthapathy, Swaminatha Sthapathy, and 61-year-old Srikanda Sthapathy.
The sculpture-making Sthapathy family has been doing for 34 generations, and their work has its roots in the Chola period, particularly in the building of the Big (Brihadeeshwara) Temple.
Gurukul Training And History
The ancient, down-through-generations gurukul system served as the foundation for the Sthapathy family's education.
After they met strict requirements outlined in a tender by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, Ministry of Culture, they were given the Nataraja project.
Three revered Nataraja idols—Uma Maheswarar Temple in Konerirajapuram, Thillai Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram, and Brihadeeshwara Temple in Thanjavur—have served as inspiration for this project.
The Traditional ‘Lost-Wax’ Casting Method
The traditional "lost-wax" casting process, which dates back to the Chola era, was used to create this statue.
A highly accurate wax model that was embellished with complex ornaments was first made.
The entire mold was covered with a special alluvial soil paste that can only be found in Swamimalai. Notably, a key component of this technique was the Cauvery clay from a specific section of the river in Swamimalai.
Transition To Ashtadhatu From Panja Loha
The statue eventually switched from being made of panja loha to being made of ashtadhatu.
During the creation process, a delegation offered input on the wax model, which led to minor alterations in the statue's limbs.
The base wax model was produced over the course of seven months thanks to the combined efforts of Srikanda and his two brothers.
