India has introduced the world's first movable disaster hospital, a ground-breaking facility comprised of 72 cubes that can be airlifted. This exceptional undertaking is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious "Project BHISHM" (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita and Maitri), which was unveiled in February 2022. The initiative was formally launched during the MedTech Expo in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

The 72 cubes that make up the center of this innovative disaster hospital are filled with a variety of necessary supplies and equipment. These include a surgical suite, a small ICU, ventilators, testing tools, an X-ray machine, a cooking station, food, water, shelter, a power generator, and more. These cubes were cleverly created to deliver life-saving medical assistance and humanitarian aid in the wake of natural disasters and humanitarian crises.

One of the Aarogya Maitri Cube's most impressive qualities is its capacity to treat a variety of serious wounds, including 40 bullet wounds, 25 major burns, about 10 head injuries, long limb fractures, spinal injuries, chest injuries, and spinal fractures. This adaptable emergency room is designed to meet the various medical requirements of survivors in difficult circumstances.

A Modular Solution For Disaster Relief

Since the Aarogya Maitri Cube is designed to be modular, disaster response missions benefit from increased effectiveness and adaptability. It consists of 72 cubes that can be combined to form a unique cage that can hold 36 mini-cubes. Almost all of the supplies needed for 100 survivors to survive for 48 hours are contained in these mini-cubes. Surprisingly, two of these cages—known as master cubes—can be connected to each other to support up to 200 survivors.

Each of these cubes is lightweight, weighing less than 20 kg, and inspired by the design of "Rubik's Cube." They can be quickly deployed to disaster-stricken areas thanks to their lightweight design, which enables them to be carried manually over distances of up to a kilometer.
