The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is the country's space agency, with headquarters in Bengaluru. ISRO's parent organization is the Department of Space, to whom it reports. The Chairman of ISRO is also a DOS executive.
From 1963 until 2023, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) was led by a succession of visionary chairmen who were instrumental in shaping India's space research and technology endeavors. These chairmen have presided over ISRO's amazing journey from humble beginnings to becoming a worldwide recognized space organization, including milestones such as satellite launches, interplanetary missions, and multinational collaborations.
Since 1963, there have been 11 ISRO Chairpersons appointed. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) named S. Somnath as the eleventh chairman of the ISRO on January 12, 2022. The IRSO's first Chairman was Dr. Vikram Sarabhai.

A Few Facts About ISRO Chairpersons
1. Vikram Sarabhai (1963 to 1972)
He is regarded as the father of India's space program. Vikaram Sarabhai founded following organizations:
Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad
Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad
Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram
Faster Breeder Test Reactor, Kalpakkam
2. M.G.K. Menon (Jan-Sep 1972)
He was well-known for his work on cosmic rays and particle physics, notably on elementary particle high-energy interactions.
One of his significant contributions was the establishment of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai.
He was a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and received the Abdus Salam Award.
In late 2008, the asteroid 7564 Gokumenon was named in his honor.
3. Satish Dhawan (1972-1984)
He succeeded Vikram Sarabhai as Chairman of ISRO in 1972. In India, his efforts resulted in functioning systems such as INSAT and PSLV.
He was a pioneering researcher in the fields of turbulence and boundary layers.
In India, he was considered as the father of experimental fluid dynamics research.
4. Udupi Ramachandra Rao (1984-1994)
In 1972, he took the responsibility of establishing satellite technology in India. In 1975, he was the primary designer of the first Indian satellite, Aryabhata.
He was also chancellor of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology and chairman of the Governing Council of the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad and the Nehru Planetarium in Bengaluru.
He's also known as "The Satellite Man of India."
5. Krishna Swami Kasturirangan (1994-2003)
ISRO has achieved several key milestones during his leadership, including the PSLV and GSLV. He was also the Project Director for BHASKARA-I and II, India's first two experimental earth observation satellites.
He was also the director of Bangalore's National Institute of Advanced Sciences.
He has three major civilian awards: the Padma Shri, the Padma Bhushan, and the Padma Vibhushan.
6. Shri G. Madhavan Nair (2003-2009)
Madhavan Nair presided over the launch of Chandrayaan-1. ISRO completed 25 successful missions during his tenure.
In 2009, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan.
He was the chairman of the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Technology, Patna.
He was also the chairman of the Space Commission and the Antrix Corporation's Governing Body.
7. K. Radhakrishnan (2009-2014)
Dr. K. Radhakrishnan led the launch of India's first interplanetary mission, 'Mangalyaan'. He worked for the Ministry of Earth Sciences as the Director of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) for five years, from 2000 to 2005.
8. Shri A S Kiran Kumar (2015-2018)
He performed admirably in the launch of India's Chandrayaan-1 and Mars Orbiter missions. Under his guidance, the Indian National Regional Navigation System (INRVS) and GAGAN developed.
In 2014, H received India's fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Sri.
He was also the director of the Ahmedabad Space Application Centre.
9. K. Sivan (2018-2022)
During his tenure, he oversaw the launch of Chandrayaan-2 and the acceleration of India's human space program. He also directed the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre.
10. S. Somnath (January 2022 to Present)
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed S. Somnath as the eleventh chairperson of the ISRO.
Somnath also directed the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre and the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre.
He is also well-known for his contributions to launch vehicle design, particularly launch vehicle systems.
