The Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) examination is conducted every year to recruit candidates for the posts of Data Entry Operator (DEO), Lower Division Clerk (LDC), and Postal Assistants/ Sorting Assistants (PA/SA), etc. in various Ministries, Departments, Organizations under the Government of India.
The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the exam every year for undergraduate students, and lakhs of candidates apply for it.
The competition is getting tougher with each passing year. Hence, a proper strategy is required to qualify the exam. The exam is conducted in three stages and candidates have to go through all the stages for final selection.
The basic eligibility criteria to appear in the SSC CHSL exam is 12th pass. Candidates who score more than the cutoff in Tier I of the exam qualify for the Tier II exam. SSC CHSL syllabus is huge, however, the number of subjects is limited. You must cover these topics regularly to complete your SSC CHSL syllabus before the last date of the exam.
SSC CHSL Exam Pattern
SSC CHSL Exam consists of the following stages:
Tier I - Computer-Based Examination
Tier II - Descriptive Paper
Tier III - Skill Test / Typing Test
Though one should prepare well for all the Tiers, yet, Tier I preparation needs special attention.
The SSC CHSL Tier I exam consists of four subjects: General Intelligence & Reasoning, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, and General Awareness. For SSC CHSL exam preparation, we suggest that you prepare and revise each and every subject. Some tips for each subject are given below:
1. General Intelligence & Reasoning
Develop your reasoning skills for problems based on problem-solving and thinking ability.
Clear Syllogism, analogy, classification, social intelligence, and other concepts.
Understand the tricks to solve seating arrangement and direction-based questions.
Solve previous years' papers to get an idea about the type of questions. Remember, all the questions in this section are data-based, hence, they have to be solved using data, which requires you to think logically.
2. English Language
For English Vocabulary, you must revise all the words you have learned so far and follow them up with daily quizzes. Increase your vocabulary by reading newspapers and make sure you learn at least one new word every day.
For the Grammar section, try to learn all the rules that have been a part of all the previous years' papers. Get at least a proper understanding of basic grammar, especially for the questions on 'English Language and Comprehension'.
Solve as many questions as possible from SSC CHSL's previous years' question papers and check your answers to learn from your mistakes.
3. Quantitative Aptitude
Firstly, revise the basics and then move towards deeper knowledge.
Solving problem-based questions takes time, so work on time management.
Learn some short-cut methods to improve your speed and accuracy.
You should learn tables up to 30, square roots, cube roots, cubes, and squares. Know all the fractions of percentage and try to apply them to the questions. By doing this you will be able to save your valuable time in the examination.
In the last few days, focus entirely on solving the previous' year papers. Work hard to make your calculations accurate and fast to get ahead in the competition.
4. General Awareness
Make notes and read newspapers.
Keep yourself updated on current affairs.
Pay special attention to these sections in General Awareness:
History section- Indian freedom struggle and Gandhian era, and medieval period.
Politics Section- Focus on Articles, latest amendments and parts of the Constitution, Fundamental Rights and Duties.
Geography Section- Focus on the boundaries around India, neighboring countries and their capitals, national animals and birds of India, Indian national parks, sanctuaries, lakes, and rivers in India.
Economy Section- Learn basic terminology used in the economy, focus on graphs and latest trends.
Science Section- Prepare formulas to formulate important laws, inventions, and theorems. Chemical Names and Common Names, Organs and Organ Systems, Animal Morphology and Anatomy, Plant and Animal Diseases, and Plant and Animal Kingdom top the SSC list.
