Description

India has had various sanitation concerns, and in order to address these issues, the Indian government started the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) in 2014. The mission's goal is to attain universal sanitation coverage and eliminate open defecation in the country.

Indian Government’s Goal For Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM)

By 2024, the Centre wants to bring approximately 50,000 more villages in India under the Open Defecation Free (ODF) + category under the SBM. This means that these settlements will have kept their ODF status, managed their solid and liquid waste, and will be visually clean. This is a huge achievement for India's sanitation program. In order to do this, the Centre would provide a 14,030 crore fund in FY24.

States That Have Obtained ODF Plus Status

The states that have acquired ODF + status are Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. Under the ODF + status, Tamil Nadu has a coverage percentage of 96%. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Minister of Jal Shakti, informed the press about these states' ODF + status.

States Pursuing ODF Plus Status Actively

In addition to the three states stated above, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Mizoram are striving hard to achieve ODF + status. These states are making substantial efforts to enhance their sanitary infrastructure, trash management, and overall environmental cleanliness.

Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) Is A Non-Profit Organization

Another crucial project initiated by the Indian government is the Jal Jeevan project (JJM). The mission's goal is to deliver safe and enough drinking water to all rural families in the country by next year through individual household tap connections. The government expects to complete this objective by 2024. In the current fiscal year, Q4 saw an average of 86,894 connections installed each second.

National Scheme Sanctioning Committee (NSSC)

The National Scheme Sanctioning Committee (NSSC) is a group that authorizes funds for SBM-G Phase II activities at the state and territorial levels. The committee has approved State/UT budgets totaling Rupees 52,049 crores for SBM-G Phase II activities through convergence for the Fiscal Year 2023-24. This demonstrates the government's dedication to meeting the SBM's objectives.
